Museo Regionale, Messina, Italy - 314 x 211 cm -124" x 83". This nativity picture was
ordered by the Senate of Messina. A humble simplicity infuses it. In the barn an ox and a donkey stand at the back,
the carpenter's tools of Joseph and on the floor dotted with straw there is a basket with a piece of bread. Joseph
introduces the shepherds to the young Virgin Mary, whose dress is a brighter red. The Mother cuddles her baby peacefully.
For this canvas Caravaggio received the highest amount of his career.
